Mutual Fund?
Physical Gold:
Gold ETF:
Gold ETF
- Expense Ratio
Gold Mutual Funds: SIP
- Gold ETF: 12
- Physical Gold: 24
- Gold Mutual Funds (Unlisted FoF):
Physical Gold vs Gold ETF vs Gold Mutual Fund:

Dhanteras 2026 Gold Buying: Physical Gold vs Gold ETF vs Gold Mutual Funds, Which Is Better?
Dhanteras Gold Buying 2026: Buying gold during Dhanteras is a popular tradition in Indian households. However, investors today have several options beyond traditional jewellery, including Gold ETFs and Gold Mutual Funds. If you are planning to invest Rs 1 lakh in gold this Dhanteras, understanding the differences between physical gold, Gold ETFs and Gold Mutual Funds is important. Making charges, GST, storage expenses and taxation rules can significantly affect your actual returns.
Dhanteras 2026: Physical Gold, Gold ETF or Gold Mutual Funds?
According to the World Gold Council, India’s jewellery demand declined 18 per cent in volume between January and September 2026. In comparison, demand for Gold ETFs increased 47 per cent to 28.8 tonnes.
These figures indicate growing interest in financial gold investments alongside traditional jewellery purchases.
The right investment option depends on your financial goals, investment horizon, expenses and risk appetite.
Physical Gold: How Much Do Jewellery Making Charges Cost?
Physical gold includes jewellery, coins and gold bars. It remains a popular choice among Indian households because of its traditional and emotional value.
However, jewellery purchases involve additional expenses that can reduce investment returns.
Buyers pay 3 per cent GST on the total jewellery value, including making charges. These charges vary depending on the design and jeweller. Most of the time, making charges are not recovered when jewellery is resold.
For example, if you spend Rs 1 lakh on jewellery with 12 per cent making charges, the actual underlying gold value comes to approximately Rs 86,685 after accounting for GST.
In this situation, gold prices would need to rise by around 15.4 per cent just to recover the initial purchase cost, assuming full metal-value realisation without additional resale deductions.
According to Kumar Binit, CEO of airpay money, buyers should first understand why they want to purchase gold before choosing an investment option.
For people who prefer physical ownership, gold coins and bars generally carry lower premiums than jewellery. However, GST, storage expenses and resale deductions still apply.
Buyers should also check the BIS hallmark and six-character HUID number before purchasing gold jewellery.
Gold ETFs: Lower Costs and No Storage Concerns
Gold Exchange Traded Funds (ETFs) are an option for investors who want exposure to gold prices without purchasing physical jewellery or coins.
Gold ETFs primarily invest in physical gold and are traded on stock exchanges. Unlike jewellery, they do not involve making charges or personal storage requirements.
However, investors need a Demat and Trading Account to buy and sell Gold ETFs.
Before investing, consider the following expenses and factors:
- Expense Ratio: The annual fund management cost.
- Brokerage Charges: Costs associated with buying and selling ETF units.
- Trading Spread: The difference between buying and selling prices.
- Tracking Difference: How closely the ETF follows gold prices.
- Liquidity: How easily ETF units can be bought or sold.
Investors should also compare the ETF’s market price with its Net Asset Value (NAV).
Gold Mutual Funds: Invest Through SIP Without a Demat Account
Gold Mutual Funds can be suitable for investors who want to invest in gold without opening a Demat Account.
These funds generally operate as Fund of Funds (FoFs), investing in Gold ETFs. Investors can also use Systematic Investment Plans (SIPs) to invest smaller amounts regularly.
However, investors should consider both the expenses of the mutual fund and the underlying Gold ETF.
There is another important development this Dhanteras. Several fund houses have temporarily suspended fresh investments and new SIP registrations in their Gold FoFs since mid-October 2026.
Existing SIPs and redemptions remain unaffected in the affected schemes, according to the provided report.
Therefore, investors should check the latest subscription status on the respective fund house’s official website before making an investment.
Gold ETF vs Physical Gold: What Are the Tax Rules?
Taxation is another important factor when comparing physical gold, Gold ETFs and Gold Mutual Funds.
The applicable long-term capital gains holding periods differ across these investment categories.
- Gold ETFs: Holding periods exceeding 12 months generally qualify for long-term capital gains treatment.
- Physical Gold: A holding period of more than 24 months is generally required for long-term capital gains.
- Gold Mutual Funds (Unlisted FoFs): These generally require a holding period exceeding 24 months for long-term capital gains treatment.
Long-term capital gains are taxed at 12.5 per cent without indexation, while short-term capital gains are taxed according to the applicable income tax slab.
For example, if an investor earns Rs 30,000 in profit from a Gold ETF after holding it for 18 months, the basic tax at 12.5 per cent would be Rs 3,750.
However, the same Rs 30,000 gain from physical gold held for 18 months could attract Rs 9,000 in basic tax for an investor in the 30 per cent tax bracket.
Applicable cess and surcharge are additional.
How Much Gold Should You Buy This Dhanteras 2026?
Gold can help diversify an investment portfolio, but it does not generate regular income like interest or dividends. Gold prices can also fluctuate depending on market conditions.
Investors should consider their financial goals, investment horizon and risk tolerance before purchasing gold.
Avoid investing more money than you can afford simply because buying gold is a traditional part of Dhanteras celebrations.
Physical Gold vs Gold ETF vs Gold Mutual Funds: Which One Should You Choose?
Physical gold may be suitable for people who want jewellery for personal use or traditional purposes.
Gold ETFs may be worth considering for investors seeking exposure to gold prices without physical storage requirements.
Gold Mutual Funds may suit investors who prefer SIP investments and do not want to open a Demat Account.
The best option ultimately depends on your financial goals, costs, convenience and investment preferences.
