Delhi NCR Weather: Why Is It Raining and Hailing After Monsoon Withdrawal?
Delhi NCR Weather Changes After Rainfall, Know Why Hailstorms Occur
New Delhi, October 12, 2026: The Delhi NCR weather conditions changed suddenly on Monday morning, with rain and thunderstorms forecast for several areas, including Delhi, Noida, Ghaziabad, Gurugram and Faridabad. The rainfall has raised questions about why northern India continues to experience unsettled weather even after the withdrawal of the southwest monsoon.
Western Disturbances and other atmospheric weather systems can contribute to such conditions. According to the forecast available on October 12, Delhi was expected to experience relatively dry weather after the morning rainfall, with partly cloudy skies and fluctuations in temperature over the following days.
IMD Forecast for Delhi NCR Rainfall
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecast rain and thunderstorms for parts of Delhi NCR on the morning of October 12. The forecast covered Delhi and nearby areas, including Gurugram, Faridabad, Noida and Ghaziabad.
Rainfall can lead to waterlogging, slower traffic and reduced visibility in some areas. Commuters should check the latest weather and traffic updates before travelling and take precautions while driving on wet roads.
Why Is It Raining After the Monsoon Withdrawal?
The withdrawal of the monsoon does not mean that rainfall completely stops across India. Western Disturbances and other weather systems can still bring rain to northern parts of the country after the southwest monsoon has retreated.
A Western Disturbance is a weather system that generally moves from west to east. It can influence cloud formation, rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds across northwestern India.
Atmospheric moisture and conditions that cause air to rise can also support the development of clouds. When these factors combine, the likelihood of rainfall increases in Delhi NCR and other parts of northern India.
Why Are Hailstorms Occurring in Northern India?
Hailstorms generally develop inside powerful thunderstorm clouds. Strong upward-moving air currents carry water droplets into extremely cold layers of the atmosphere, where the droplets freeze into small ice particles.
These ice particles can move up and down within the clouds, collecting additional layers of ice as they grow. Once they become too heavy to remain suspended, they fall to the ground as hailstones.
However, not every rainstorm produces hail. The possibility of hail depends on local atmospheric conditions, moisture, temperature and the strength of the upward-moving air currents inside storm clouds.
How Long Will the Rain Continue in Delhi NCR?
According to the forecast available on October 12, rainfall in Delhi was expected to be limited, with relatively dry conditions likely over the following days. Skies could remain partly cloudy, while daytime temperatures were expected to rise again.
Weather conditions in other northern states could remain different. Parts of Uttarakhand, Himachal Pradesh and Punjab had varying chances of rainfall on different dates. Conditions in Haryana and western Uttar Pradesh could also change depending on local weather systems.
The duration and intensity of rainfall may change as new weather systems develop. Residents should therefore follow the latest IMD bulletins for location-specific updates.
Will Delhi NCR Experience Colder Weather After the Rain?
Rainfall, cloud cover and cooler winds can temporarily lower temperatures. However, a brief drop in temperature does not necessarily indicate the immediate arrival of winter.
The forecast issued on October 12 estimated a maximum temperature of 32–34°C in Delhi on October 13 and 33–35°C on October 14.
The temperature outlook available at that time for October 13 to October 17 was as follows:
- October 13: Maximum 32–34°C, minimum 23–25°C
- October 14: Maximum 33–35°C, minimum 23–25°C
- October 15: Maximum 31–33°C, minimum 23–25°C
- October 16: Maximum 32–34°C, minimum 22–24°C
- October 17: Maximum 32–34°C, minimum 22–24°C
These figures reflect the forecast available at the time and are not verified actual temperatures. Conditions may change as updated forecasts are issued.
Safety Tips for Commuters During Heavy Rain
Heavy rainfall across Delhi NCR can cause waterlogging, traffic delays and reduced visibility. Thunderstorms and strong winds can also create hazardous conditions.
- Check the latest weather and traffic updates before leaving home.
- Avoid waterlogged roads whenever possible.
- Drive slowly on wet roads and maintain a safe distance from other vehicles.
- Avoid open areas and isolated trees during lightning.
- Follow local weather warnings and safety advisories issued by the authorities.
