BRICS Summit 2026:
BRICS Summit
Modi-Xi Jinping Meeting: India and China Look to Rebuild Ties for 2.8 Billion People
BRICS Summit 2026: Xi Jinping Expected to Visit India After Seven Years as New Delhi and Beijing Work to Improve Relations
New Delhi: India and China are making cautious efforts to rebuild their strained relationship, with Chinese President Xi Jinping expected to visit India this weekend for the upcoming BRICS Summit 2026.
The visit would be Xi Jinping’s first trip to India in seven years and comes after years of careful diplomacy aimed at bringing bilateral relations back on track following the deadly border clashes between the two countries in 2020.
India-China Relations Hit a Low After 2020 Border Clashes
India and China have been locked in a long-running strategic and territorial dispute for decades. Relations deteriorated sharply after violent clashes in the Himalayan region in 2020.
At least 20 Indian soldiers were killed in the clashes, while China did not publicly disclose the full number of its military casualties. The incident triggered a major downturn in bilateral relations.
Political dialogue slowed, high-level engagement declined and tensions also affected trade and investment between the two Asian powers.
Modi and Xi Have Pursued Cautious Rapprochement
Since the 2020 crisis, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Xi Jinping have gradually attempted to stabilize relations through meetings at regional and international forums.
The two leaders have crossed paths at events in Russia, Kyrgyzstan and China as part of efforts to maintain dialogue despite continuing differences.
Xi’s expected visit to India for the BRICS summit could now become another important step in that process.
BRICS Summit Could Provide Platform for India-China Dialogue
The upcoming BRICS Summit in New Delhi is expected to provide an important diplomatic platform for India and China.
Experts believe multilateral forums such as BRICS can help the two countries manage their differences while continuing diplomatic engagement.
Praveen Donthi, a senior analyst with Crisis Group, said that structural differences and a significant strategic trust deficit remain major challenges in India-China relations. However, multilateral platforms such as BRICS can provide space to manage these challenges.
Why India-China Relations Matter to 2.8 Billion People
India and China together account for roughly 2.8 billion people, making the relationship between the two countries one of the most consequential bilateral relationships in the world.
Improved ties could have an impact on trade, investment, regional security, supply chains and the wider global economy.
At the same time, major challenges remain, particularly over the border dispute and strategic distrust between New Delhi and Beijing.
Modi-Xi Meeting Will Be Closely Watched
The potential Modi-Xi Jinping meeting at the BRICS Summit 2026 will be closely watched for signs of progress in India-China relations.
Discussions could focus on maintaining peace along the disputed border, improving diplomatic engagement and strengthening economic ties.
While the two countries still face significant disagreements, Xi Jinping’s expected India visit could signal a cautious attempt by both sides to prevent tensions from escalating and to establish a more stable relationship.
