US Midterm Elections 2026:

US Midterm Elections 2026: Democrats Win Senate, Flip Seven Seats; Major Setback for Donald Trump and Republicans

US Midterm Elections 2026: The 2026 US Midterm Elections have delivered a major political victory for the Democratic Party, which has regained control of the Senate after flipping seven Republican-held seats. The results mark a significant setback for President Donald Trump and his second-term political agenda. Democrats are also projected to make substantial gains in the House of Representatives, potentially securing their largest majority since 2009.

Democrats Regain Senate Control After Flipping Seven Republican Seats

Democrats needed a net gain of four seats to regain control of the Senate. The party secured the required majority after Democratic state Representative Josh Turek defeated Republican Representative Ashley Hinson in Iowa.

In Maine, Democrat Troy Jackson defeated five-term Republican Senator Susan Collins, ending her nearly 30-year tenure in the Senate. At the time the Maine race was called, Democrats had secured 53 Senate contests compared with 41 for Republicans.

Democrats also retained Minnesota’s open Senate seat, where Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan defeated Republican candidate and former sports broadcaster Michele Tafoya.

In Texas, Democrat James Talarico flipped a Republican-held seat despite Republicans significantly outspending Democrats in one of the most expensive races of the midterm election cycle.

Major Democratic Victories in Kansas, Ohio and North Carolina

In Kansas, Democratic Reverend Adam Hamilton defeated Republican Senator Roger Marshall, becoming the first Democrat elected to represent the state in the Senate since 1932.

Former Democratic Senator Sherrod Brown won the Ohio Senate race against Republican Senator Jon Husted, delivering another major victory for Democrats.

In South Carolina, Democrat Annie Andrews defeated Republican Darline Graham, the sister of the late Senator Lindsey Graham. Darline Graham had been appointed to complete her brother’s term following his death in July and had received Trump’s support for a full term.

In North Carolina, former Democratic Governor Roy Cooper defeated Trump-endorsed Republican candidate Michael Whatley, the former chair of the Republican National Committee. Cooper flipped the seat previously held by retiring Republican Senator Thom Tillis, becoming the first Democrat to win a Senate race in the state since 2008.

In New Hampshire, Democratic Representative Chris Pappas defeated Republican John Sununu, becoming the first openly gay man elected to the US Senate.

Florida and Georgia Election Results

Republican Representative Byron Donalds won Florida’s gubernatorial election, defeating former Democratic Representative David Jolly and succeeding Governor Ron DeSantis.

In Florida’s Senate race, Republican Senator Ashley Moody faced a challenge from Democratic state Representative Angie Nixon. With 96% of votes counted, Moody was leading with 51% against Nixon’s 48%.

In Georgia, Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff secured re-election with 64% of the vote, defeating Republican Representative Mike Collins, who received 36%.

Democratic incumbent governors Wes Moore in Maryland, Josh Shapiro in Pennsylvania and J.B. Pritzker in Illinois also won re-election.

Democrats Expected to Make Major Gains in the House

Democrats were also strongly positioned to regain control of the House of Representatives. Election projections indicated that the party could gain significantly more than the three seats needed to retake the chamber.

Cook Political Report estimated that Democrats could gain as many as 25 seats, potentially giving them their largest House majority since 2009.

A total of 23 House races were rated as toss-ups, with only four of those seats held by Democrats. Competitive contests included Ohio’s 7th District, where Republican Representative Max Miller faced Democratic challenger Brian Poindexter, as well as Kentucky’s 6th District, Montana’s 1st District and Iowa’s 2nd District.

Cost of Living and Inflation Emerge as Major Election Issues

Rising living costs, inflation, fuel prices, grocery bills, utilities and healthcare expenses emerged as major concerns for American voters.

CNN exit polling found that approximately 60% of voters disapproved of Trump’s job performance. Around 90% said the cost of living was a crucial or major factor in their voting decisions.

Approximately 75% expressed dissatisfaction with the direction of the country, while around two-thirds blamed Trump for worsening economic conditions.

An Associated Press exit poll found that approximately 80% of voters said inflation had caused moderate or severe financial hardship for their households. More than 80% were concerned about the cost of gasoline, groceries, utilities and healthcare.

More than half of voters expected life to become worse for the next generation. Around 60% also believed Trump was more concerned about his personal interests than the interests of the country.

The US military action against Iran also became an election issue. Around 60% of voters considered the decision to attack Iran wrong, while approximately one-third said the Iran war was an important factor in their congressional voting decisions.

Trump Sends Letters to Democrats Over Alaska Election Investigation

On Election Day, President Donald Trump sent letters to at least 20 Democrats suggesting they were potential targets in a criminal investigation related to possible voter confusion in Alaska.

The investigation involved candidate Daniel J. Sullivan’s candidacy in the state’s Senate race and whether it had been deliberately arranged to confuse voters supporting Republican incumbent Senator Daniel S. Sullivan.

Trump also criticised media coverage of his final midterm speech at the Lincoln Memorial Reflecting Pool.

Meanwhile, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis expressed concerns about Republican election prospects, saying Democrats appeared energised and warning that his party could lose major races if Republican turnout remained weak.

Georgia Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger said the state was on track to record approximately 1.2 million Election Day ballots. Republican strategists had estimated that at least 1.5 million votes would be needed to overcome weak early voting among Republicans.

Election Result Delays Expected in New York and North Carolina

Voting machine problems in Westchester County, New York, were expected to delay results in several races, including the competitive congressional contest involving Republican Representative Mike Lawler.

North Carolina was also expected to experience slight delays in reporting election results because of minor disruptions.

California Billionaire Tax Proposal Becomes a Major Issue

California voters also considered Proposition 40, a proposal to introduce a one-time 5% tax on approximately 260 billionaires living in the state.

Google co-founder Sergey Brin contributed more than $100 million to the Building a Better California political action committee, which supported competing proposals, including Propositions 41 and 42.

Proposition 41 sought to restrict exemptions related to state spending limits on revenue collected through new taxes, while Proposition 42 proposed prohibiting wealth taxes and retroactive taxes.

According to estimates, California’s 10 wealthiest billionaires could collectively face approximately $31.5 billion in taxes if Proposition 40 passes. Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg could face a potential tax bill of around $10.9 billion.

AI Data Centres and Rising Electricity Costs Become Election Issues

Concerns over artificial intelligence data centres, electricity consumption and water usage also featured prominently in several state-level ballot discussions.

States including Ohio, Illinois, Wisconsin, California, Florida, Nevada, New Jersey, North Dakota, Kansas and Maine considered issues related to data centre development.

Ohio had 21 ballot issues concerning data centres, including proposals to ban them in 13 municipalities.

Growing concerns about electricity bills, water consumption and increased energy demand have made AI data centres an important political issue during the midterm elections.

Trump’s Approval Rating Stands at 38%

President Donald Trump’s approval rating was another major political talking point during the election cycle.

According to Nate Silver’s Silver Bulletin polling tracker, Trump’s approval rating stood at 38%. His approval rating was 40% during the final week of October 2018. Former President Joe Biden also recorded a 40% approval rating halfway through his presidency, according to Gallup.

Following the Democratic victory, the party is expected to increase scrutiny of the Trump administration, including investigations into business dealings, cryptocurrency ventures and government contracts involving companies associated with Elon Musk.

Forbes estimated that Trump’s net worth had increased by at least $2.7 billion since his return to the presidency, largely driven by his cryptocurrency ventures.

Democrats have also discussed investigations involving Trump’s personal business interests and his administration’s policies. However, a third impeachment effort has not emerged as an immediate priority, as removing a president through conviction requires a two-thirds majority in the Senate.

The 2026 US Midterm Elections have reshaped the political landscape, with Democrats regaining control of the Senate and positioning themselves for major gains in the House. The results could create significant political challenges for President Donald Trump during the remainder of his second term.
