Delhi News:

Delhi Traders Urge Sonia Gandhi to Postpone Rahul Gandhi’s November 1 Rally, Cite ₹12,000 Crore Trade at Risk

NEW DELHI: The Chamber of Trade and Industry (CTI), a Delhi-based trade body, has urged senior Congress leader Sonia Gandhi to postpone the proposed mega rally at Ramlila Maidan on November 1. The traders’ organisation has warned that the event could disrupt business across around 20 major markets in the national capital during the crucial pre-Diwali shopping season.

Delhi Traders Raise Concerns Over Business Disruption

According to the CTI, the markets collectively generate daily business worth approximately ₹10,000 crore to ₹12,000 crore. Traders fear that heavy traffic, large crowds and possible restrictions on vehicle movement could disrupt shopping and the transportation of goods ahead of Diwali.

Dhanteras falls on November 6, while Diwali is scheduled for November 8. The trade body said November 1 is an important day for transporting festive goods and for shoppers preparing for the festival.

Rally Expected to Draw 10 Lakh People

The CTI has expressed concern that the proposed rally could attract around 10 lakh people and 15,000 to 20,000 vehicles to Delhi. It warned that a shortage of parking space near Ramlila Maidan could lead to severe traffic congestion in central Delhi.

CTI chairman Brijesh Goyal said the traders were not opposing the rally but were seeking to protect their businesses and livelihoods during the peak festive season.

Around 20 Major Markets Could Be Affected

The trade body has warned of possible disruption in several major commercial areas, including Chandni Chowk, Sadar Bazar, Connaught Place, Palika Bazar, Janpath, Bhagirath Palace, Khari Baoli, Kashmiri Gate, Naya Bazar, Lajpat Rai Market, Chawri Bazar, Kinari Bazar, Dariba Kalan, Ballimaran, Fatehpuri, Karol Bagh, Jama Masjid, Gaffar Market and Daryaganj.

According to the CTI, these markets supply goods to different parts of the country and depend on regular transportation from industrial areas across Delhi.

The organisation said around 5,000 trucks and tempos arrive daily from 56 industrial areas, including Narela, Bawana, Okhla, Mayapuri, Mundka, Udyog Nagar and Mangolpuri.

CTI Warns of Traffic Restrictions

The traders’ body has also raised concerns about possible traffic restrictions before the rally. It said vehicles could begin arriving at Delhi’s borders, including Singhu, Tikri, Ghazipur and Badarpur, from the afternoon of October 31.

The CTI claimed that transporters had already started expressing reluctance to send vehicles to the markets from October 31. It also referred to traffic disruption during an earlier protest as a reason for concern.

Traders fear that severe congestion could affect the delivery of goods and prevent customers from reaching commercial areas during the busy festive period.

CTI Suggests Two Alternatives

To reduce the possible impact on businesses, the CTI has proposed two alternatives to the organisers. It has requested that the rally be postponed until after November 10. If rescheduling is not possible, the organisation has suggested shifting the event to Burari Maidan.

The proposed event, titled the ‘Chalo Dilli Ramlila March’, has been organised by the opposition INDIA bloc to protest alleged vote theft. Rahul Gandhi has described the march as an effort to protect democracy and the Constitution and has appealed to people to participate.

The CTI had also written to Rahul Gandhi, urging him to consider postponing the rally because of its potential impact on businesses ahead of Diwali. Traders are awaiting a response from the Congress leadership.
